Internship scope & description

Presently, the energy sector alone is responsible for a staggering 30% of global methane emissions, with oil and gas facilities being prominent sources of these emissions. Detecting methane leaks and emissions plays a vital role in combating the escalating global temperatures. Mitigating methane emissions depends on accurately detecting them. In the Oil and Gas industry, methane emissions are often spread over wide production facilities and across various sites. Only areas close enough to grounded sensors can be monitored, but the dispersion of methane over big sites poses challenges in the accurate measure and quantification of such emissions, while posing workers near those sites at risk.

Satellite imagery, such as those provided by the European Space Agency and the EU Copernicus program can provide a global map of methane concentrations every day. This internship will explore the adoption of artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques to allow the automatic detection, monitoring and prediction of methane concentrations, thus supporting mitigation activities for reducing methane emissions.

In particular, the intern will carry out the following activities:

Perform a review about open repositories for satellite imagery (e.g. EU ESA Copernicus, NASA, JAXA, etc.

Perform a literature review about state-of-the-art computer vision and deep learning approaches for detect methane emissions on satellite imagery

Implement computer vision and/or deep learning algorithms to detect methane emissions from satellite imagery
